TechTex P - Geomembrane Protection Geotextile

TechTex P

TechTex© P is a nonwoven geotextile produced by needle punching high strength polypropylene fibres and applying heat treatment. It is manufactured at higher weights than the other types in the family, for placement above or below geomembranes as a protection layer. [VERIFY: raw material and weight range]

The load that threatens a geomembrane arrives as concentrated pressure from sharp edged particles within the fill. TechTex© P distributes this concentrated load through its own thickness, reducing the stress that reaches the membrane surface. The fibre mass compresses under load to accommodate the indentation of the particle, delaying the point at which the membrane reaches its critical strain level.

TechTex P Functions

When placed between the sealing layer and the fill material, TechTex© P performs four functions in a single layer. Thanks to its high weight structure, its principal contribution is protecting the geomembrane surface against the concentrated pressure of sharp edged particles. The same fibre mass allows water to pass while retaining fine particles, prevents layers of different particle sizes from mixing, and distributes the stresses beneath the fill over a wide area.

Drainage

The needle punched fibre mass has the capacity to transmit water within its own plane. As the weight increases so does the thickness, enlarging the cross sectional area available for water transmission. Water accumulating in the soil is collected laterally and directed towards the drainage line, preventing a rise in pore water pressure.

Filtration

The pore structure of the product allows water to pass freely while preventing the migration of fine soil particles. Because the thick cross section retains fine particles gradually through its depth rather than at a single surface, clogging develops more slowly and the system retains its function for a long period.

Reinforcement

Fill placed over weak subgrade spreads laterally under load and causes settlement. TechTex© P distributes the stresses beneath the fill over a wide area, reducing the risk of local failure and contributing to bearing capacity.

Separation

When two soil layers of different particle sizes come into direct contact, fine particles fill the voids of the granular material and the fill loses its bearing capacity. TechTex© P forms a continuous and thick separating layer between the two courses, preventing this mixing and preserving the performance of the granular fill.

Three Dimensional Fibre Mass Distributing Concentrated Load

During needle punching, thousands of needles interlock the fibres with one another not only in the surface plane but through the thickness as well. The resulting structure is not a thin membrane but a three dimensional fibre mass containing void volume. When a sharp edged particle presses into this mass, the fibres compress and change direction at the point of contact, the contact area widens, and the load is transferred not to a single fibre but to the surrounding fibres as well. As the weight increases, both the quantity of fibre per unit area and the thickness increase, so the amount of energy absorbed before the membrane reaches its critical strain level rises.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. What Is TechTex P?

TechTex© P is a nonwoven geotextile produced by needle punching polypropylene fibres and applying heat treatment. It is manufactured at high weights for use as a protection layer for geomembranes and protects the sealing layer against mechanical damage.

2. What Is the Difference Between TechTex P and TechTex UV?

Both products are needle punched nonwoven geotextiles, but they are developed for different problems. TechTex© UV is manufactured to limit strength loss caused by sunlight in applications that remain exposed after placement. TechTex© P is manufactured at higher weights to protect the geomembrane surface against puncture.

3. Why Is a Geomembrane Protection Layer Necessary?

Sharp edged particles present in the fill material above or below the geomembrane apply concentrated pressure to the membrane surface. This pressure can cause immediate puncture during placement and a gradual accumulation of strain over the service life. A protection geotextile distributes this load, allowing the membrane to maintain its sealing function.

4. Which Functions Does TechTex P Provide?

It performs drainage, filtration, reinforcement and separation functions in a single layer. Thanks to its high weight structure, its principal contribution is protecting the geomembrane surface against the concentrated pressure of sharp edged particles.

5. How Is the Weight of a Protection Geotextile Selected?

The selection is based on the particle size and angularity of the fill material, the layer thickness, the stress acting on the membrane and the thickness of the membrane itself. For this reason a single weight is not suitable for every project, and the value is determined by calculation on a project basis.

6. Where Is TechTex P Used?

It is used as a geomembrane protection layer in landfill sites, mine tailings storage facilities, reservoir and pond sealing applications, and canal linings. It is also preferred in infrastructure applications requiring separation and drainage beneath fill.
